Education and Purchase of a Musical Instrument Fund

The Fund for the purchase and learning of a musical instrument is intended to assist local musical societies in making the cultural and artistic sector more accessible to everyone, and provide a platform for young people to grow their musical talent in order to preserve the traditions and culture in our local community.

The Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government, through the Malta Arts Council and in collaboration with the Band Clubs Association launched a new fund that targets the purchase and learning of musical instruments for the Malta Band Society.

The fund will strengthen the work done by the Musical Societies, in order to promote music further in our local communities, and also to assist in the purchase and education of musical instruments. Such initiatives by Musical Societies make the cultural and artistic sector more accessible for everyone and provide the platform for our youth, in the discovery of their talents.

This fund will co-finance musical instruments that are purchased for use by band players who are registered with the applicant Society. The fund will cover up to 85% of the total cost of the project, and the proposal needs to include a detailed and realistic program, the name and experience details of the tutor, along with details of the learning material covered. The eligible list of instruments under this scheme are the piccolo, oboe, cor anglais, bass, clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, eflat trumpet, flugehorn, bass trombone and the double bass.

The registered band members need to have at least 2 years experience playing instruments from the same musical family as the one on which the co-financing is sought, and/or 3 years, in the case where the musical family of the instrument is changed. The band player is expected to appear in front of a panel of experts for an audition, in order to confirm a good level of competence. The proposed project needs to also have innovative, professional and creative aspects in its' delivery and implementation. The application also needs to consider the long term sustainability of the project as well as its' scope and benefits.
